Deconstructing Construction Stereotypes

It’s probably fair to say we work in an industry that gets a bad rap. After all, while concrete has led the way in construction for a very long time, it has often been at the expense of the environment. However, this isn’t something we’re comfortable with, and we’re doing our bit to turn the tables on concrete and asphalt construction stereotypes.

In 2024, we gained our Level 1 carbon certification, significant and measured steps towards reducing our carbon emissions. However, 2025 will be about implementing practical solutions. We’ll share more as we move forward, hopefully inspiring others in the industry to take a hard look at their practices too.

See You at the Fair!

We’re looking forward to the Swannanoa Country Fair where we reckon we’ll be the biggest kids in the sandpit!

A major fundraising initiative for Te Koromiko Swannanoa School, this iconic country fair is set for Sunday 9th March and this year, we’ll be there with one of our diggers.

We’ve been updating our digger fleet, replacing older machines with newer, cleaner, and greener equipment as a significant start on our journey towards decarbonisation. Levelling up our green credentials, we’re powering towards fossil-free work sites while ensuring optimum productivity.

In New Zealand, nearly all off-road construction equipment is powered by diesel, amounting to billions of litres of diesel each year. In fact, the industry accounts for almost 30% of all diesel used nationwide (Read more). However, little by little, digger by digger, we can do our bit to turn this around.

While greener equipment comes with a hefty bill right now, when you really start crunching the numbers, we’re confident the benefits will outweigh the cost:

  • With the increased efficiency of modern engines comes decreased operating costs
  • Performance advantages (in some applications)
  • Ability to operate more freely where construction activity is limited by air pollution regulations
  • Reduced noise levels
  • Lower emissions / no fumes

It’s early days yet, but we’re excited about regenerative business sustainability. More than just minimising harm, it’s ambitious and bold, and we’re actively creating positive change for our people, for the land, for the future, and for the long-term success of business.
